My Pictures, My Music, My Videos–Where did they go?

click-pictures.pngMy Pictures, My Music, My Videos are still there. Microsoft realized that prefacing everything with “My” was annoying, so they removed the prefix.

They also moved the folders to a different place. Instead of being with My Documents (er, just Documents now), they’ve been promoted up one level, to the same level as Documents. Well, all you need to know is that they’re directly on your Start menu.  Just click Start, and then click the folder in the upper-right corner of your Start menu. Except for Videos. For Videos, you’ll need to click Start, click your username, and then double-click Videos in the Explorer window that opens.
If you want to know the physical folder locations, follow the jump…

With Vista, Microsoft did their best to shorten folder paths. Instead of storing user profile files under C:\Documents and Settings\username, they’re now in C:\Users\username. Your familiar folders are now stored at:

  • My Documents = C:\Users\username\Documents
  • My Pictures = C:\Users\username\Pictures
  • My Music = C:\Users\username\Music
  • My Videos = C:\Users\username\Videos

[...] Hi, Greg. Your documents should be in the Documents folder (it’s been renamed from “My Documents”). You can click Start, Documents. As long as you did an upgrade and not a re-install, all your old documents are automatically copied to the new documents folder. If you did a custom install rather than an upgrade, the files will still be there, but they won’t be automatically migrated. Look in the following folder: [...]

[...] First, you seem to know that Windows XP stored documents in “C:Documents and Settings” while Vista stores them at “C:Users”. I mention that just to verify that you’re looking in the right place. [...]

well, that’s all fine and good, pictures is still there… and renamed as pictures rather than my pictures… but where is music. the folder has disappeared entirely, and there is a shortcut to “my music” in documents, which tells me I don’t have administrator rights to open the folder. (I am the only user on my laptop, and certainly have all admin rights - additionally have tried starting in safe mode and logging into admin user to change this, to no avail…) What’s going on?

I want to change the path of my files from C:\Users\Gareth to D:\Users\Gareth like you could with My Documents in XP. Any Ideas?

Gareth, you can do that to the folders by right-clicking them and going to properties, there will be a tab called location. make your changes there. windows vista will prompt you that you will get 2 copys of the folder if you change the location to another drive, like from C to D. just as a heads up.
