Recently I wrote an article about using multiple monitors for Microsoft on Windows XP. The good news is that the steps in that article still applies for Windows Vista (except for the screenshots).
The bad news is that Windows Vista doesn’t really improve how Windows works with multiple monitors. Here are some of the flaws: (after the jump)
- The taskbar still only shows up on the primary monitor
- Windows Vista won’t remember your settings when you dock or undock your computer.
- There’s still no easy way to move windows between monitors
The worse news is that Vista (or the Vista drivers) actually add some bugs.
Ultramon helps with all of those. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work perfectly with Vista. If you move a window from the main monitor to a secondary monitor with the smart taskbar, sometimes the taskbar button moves. Other times, it doesn’t. So, it gets really confusing when some taskbar buttons are on the wrong monitor.
Monitor detection seems to be a real problem. Often, when i start up my computer, it detects my monitors incorrectly and won’t let me put them into a normal resolution. It helps to put my computer in Sleep before docking or undocking, but sometimes I still need to restart the the computer to get the monitors detected correctly. I’ve assigned hotkeys to different monitor profiles in Ultramon. Sometimes, pressing the hotkeys configures the displays correctly. Other times, it just doesn’t work.
Just wanted to warn other users of multiple monitors, give the work-arounds I’ve found, and solicit advice for fixing these problems.

Bug or possibility?
Is it possible to have your primary monitor to the right? so that the start button is aligned to the rightcenter?
David, yes. In Windows Vista, just use your mouse to grab an empty portion of the taskbar, and drag it to the right monitor.
You can also edit your Display Settings, click the right monitor, and select the This Is My Main Monitor checkbox.
Hi,
I have heard that Vista Aero Theme will not work with multiple monitors unless they’re video cards have the same driver.
Any idea on this? I’m hoping to use my integrated video for one monitor and a dual PCI express card for the others. I only have room for one low power low profile pci express card and I want want to run 3 monitors total, so hopefully I can…
I also use Ultramon
Kelly, you’re right. Aero requires WDDM drivers, and you can only have one WDDM driver at a time. This describes the situation:

Multiple monitors with different drivers will still work fine with Aero disabled.
Hi Tony
I’m in the process of looking at a new computer with Vista Home Premium 32bit.
Right now i have a Samsung SyncMaster 191t monitor, but i’m also going to be getting a Dell 24″ monitor. Both monitors will be hooked up to the Nvidia XFX 8600GTS video card. Can you tell me how to go about configuring Vista so I can run two applications at the same time.
Thanks
On my HP 2510p, after I disconnect an external display the task bar becomes almost invisible. Only a contour and the Vista logo is visible. It remains sensitive to mouse-over however so window icons still pop up and quick launch pop-ups also still work.
The only way I found to restore the task bar is to briefly lower my laptop’s resolution, click Apply, and reinstate the higher resolution.
Vista will not preserve my main monitor selection, after reboot or screen saver. Is there something I’m missing?
I have Vista on my laptop for work. The PC is connected thru a docking station to another monitor, the laptop is the right of the monitor. Everytime I lock my PC (eg, when I leave my desk), when I come back and login Vista resets my multi-display settings. It resets it as if my external monitor is to the right of the laptop, and sometimes it changes the screen resolutions. I then have to go into the display settings and move the external monitor to the left, which is a pain to have to do many many times during the day.
Any known solution for this?
I have a laptop with Vista and a 21″ monitor.
I want to try the multipal monitors.
How do I do this?
my screen went horizon it use to be veritcal
