I have this error on an XP machine machine and the reg fix is not working. I’m assuming it is Vista specific. Do you have a fix for XP? Specifically I get the error opening a powerpoint or word document embedded in a .chm file.

That would work, or you could open notepad, copy the .reg file contents from this post, and save the file as something.reg. Then, double-click the new .reg file from Windows Explorer.

If the error prevents you from even streaming web content or running web programs direct, simply do this: Uninstall ie from your control panel. This will default your windows with ie6 in xp, or ie7 in vista. my issue was instantly solved…

Yes, I see that, but my issue is this:
This entire thread is about a corruption/error which prevents ie from downloading from windows, meaning that the same error prevents access to the .zip file… I can’t even stream audio, video, or flash content due to this issue… guess I gotta just find another computer & put the .reg file on a usb drive.

The .ZIP file contains a single .REG file (which I copied above). The .REG file is just a text file that, when you double-click it, makes a change to your registry to fix a specific problem.

I don’t get it. How will this .zip file help if ie wont allow me to download anything? … & what do I do with this .reg file? There are thousands of .reg files within hundreds of folders. Where do I put it, or how do I run it? as a novice, i’m a little nervous about jacking with the registry (especially since my system is already messed).

I have WIn XP SP3. It doesnot work. Also it is depends from local user account. SO perhaps it is system registry. But whwere is this fucking place

WOW! What a help!!! I just bought a brand new Toshiba and had the problem. Tech support had me disable all startup stuff, then had me “reset” Internet Explorer, and finally, the killer; they wanted me to reinstall windows (after I spend a week loading all my stuff!!!!
Needless to say, I said thanks and good bye.

Should have “googled” the problem first; silly me.
It worked like a charm.

Thank you very much for this fix! I’ve been experiencing this problem on an OEM installation of Vista Home Premium on my new laptop. Help never worked right straight out of the box! It’s working fine after applying your registry fix.

I don’t have Dreameaver installed but I have the same problem and can’t download any file using IE7 on Vista Ultimate after upgrading from XP. I checked my registry and all keys are as described. Any additional suggestion will greatly help before I downgrade back to XP.
