Hi guys, i have a problem which i really hope some one had it and went through it, so they can help me. When i finished installing and everything, they told me to write the product key again, which i did (i got it from somewhere). Step 1. While running a copy of Windows Vista that hasn’t yet been activated, click the Start button, type regedit into the Search box, then press Enter to launch the Registry Editor.

Step 2. Explore down to the following Registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ SL

Step 3. Right-click the Registry key named SkipRearm and click Edit. The default is a Dword (a double word or 4 bytes) with a hex value of 00000000. Change this value to any positive integer, such as 00000001, save the change, and close the Registry Editor.

Step 4. Start a command prompt with administrative rights. The fastest way to do this is to click the Start button, enter cmd in the Search box, then press Ctrl+Shift+Enter. If you’re asked for a network username and password, provide the ones that log you into your domain. You may be asked to approve a User Account Control prompt and to provide an administrator password.

Step 5. Type one of the following two commands and press Enter:

slmgr -rearm
or
rundll32 slc.dll,SLReArmWindows

Either command uses Vista’s built-in Software Licensing Manager (SLMGR) to push the activation deadline out to 30 days after the command is run. Changing SkipRearm from 0 to 1 allows SLMGR to do this an indefinite number of times. Running either command initializes the value of SkipRearm back to 0.

Step 6. Reboot the PC to make the postponement take effect. (After you log in, if you like, you can open a command prompt and run the command slmgr -xpr to see Vista’s new expiration date and time. I explained the slmgr command and its parameters in my Feb. 15 article.)

Step 7. To extend the activation deadline of Vista indefinitely, repeat steps 1 through 6 as necessary.

Any crooked PC seller with even the slightest technical skill could easily install a command file that would carry out steps 1 through 6 automatically. The program could run slmgr -rearm three times, 30 days apart, to postpone Vista’s activation deadline to 120 days. It could then run skip -rearm every 30 days, for a period of months if not years, by first resetting the SkipRearm key.

I hope someone can give me some ideas. I installed Vista without using the CD key as a clean install. When I try later to enter the key it tells me this key is for an upgrade version. This is true, and I do have several Win XP disc, but do not want to go through the process of uninstalling vista, installing XP and then reinstalling Vista. What do I do to let vista know I do have the older XP?

Hello, I actually own a full version of Vista Home Premium which I installed over XP as a clean install. I have been having all sorts of problems recently with the pc not shutting down, WMP11 is corrupt somehow - plays tracks almost to the end but then they are distorted. It also burns tracks to disc the same - with a distortion. I have been led to believe I can re-install my software as a clean install - not just over the top of itself - so that any malware, corruptions etc are deletecd Apparently, I have been told, I cannot just re-install Vista over itself as this does not always remove any problems that are there, such as malware and the corruptions in the media player. Is this correct? If so, how do I re-install my Windows Home Premium (full version)as a clean install.

Just boot from the vista installation disk, go throught the installation process and it will ask you where to install it. Then you select the drive you want to install it to (in this case the one you have already installed it on), then format it so that it wipes everything off first, the installs it clean.

just place you dvd on your drive boot from dvd after all that windows vista load files and start, select language and country after that intro productkey then on the upgrade or advaced instalation option, select advanced, then delete all partions on hard disk , if there are some, then make a new partion on the unpartitionaded HHDD. then format it and run vista, youll should not not have errors at all

For those of you that have lost your product key, I advise trying to find the package that your copy of vista came in; a sticker will be on it with your product key. for the person who was shafted and had the product key stolen, sorry, that can’t be helped without buying a new vista license. for those of you who are whining and bitching for a free license key, this site logs your IPs, along with every other site on the internet. calling yourself anonymous isn’t going to do jack, and asking on random sites for the product key is just making the chances you’re caught that much higher. As most of you know, sharing keys or providing keys for others to use is illegal. Quite sure you also know Shocks is pulling your leg with that bogus key. Lol! The best way to get a valid CD key is to buy a valid copy of Windows Vista. Even if someone gives you a CD key, Microsoft keeps a tally on how many times a key is used. If it notices a key that has been used multiple times, it will invalidate the key. Then, when you try to get updates from Microsoft Updates, the process will not run and will inform you of the illegal copy of Windows you are running. Then, it can ultimately disable the OS from running properly. Just thought I’d put my 2 cents in. Vista prices are down… Go buy a copy! Or, continue to run Win XP which is a better OS anyway!!!

Anyone help? I bought a computer with Vista Ultimate on it second hand. It worked fine for 6+ months, now I have a message saying product key needed in 28 days.

I typed it in but it says it is already in use. looks like whoever sold it to me has the original and activated it or some such?

I don’t mind paying but if I download from Microsoft site as ‘upgrade’ will I get a new product key and should that work ok?

I’m confused as to whether upgrade will work or not as I apparently have a dud copy of Vista………

I’ve been waiting for this day to come and now that the software which keep’s my blood pressure up is asking me to pa buy it, is it insane, the only good thing about it is that it installs all driver’s by it self, but even that, if you want some other driver’s, in this case driver’s for graphic’s(ATI radeon 9600 256MB) it just simply won’t work, you install it, and then you can’t watch a movie,.., and the reboot’s and CPU being over used all the time, RAM overloaded, 512MB of RAM is needed just to watch a desktop without any programs, just start-ups,…,bye Windows, hello Linux, mybe also XP for games, but 452€=668$(now that it is so low), man, I could get a new computer for that,..

After the the demo activation period expired, I entered my desktop using safemode since its the only way to enter. I used the steps to change the value of skiprearm and entered one of the commands in cmd, an error appeared and realised i can only use the steps before the activation period expires. Is there a way to change the activation status iam in using the registry editor?

i got aversion of vista ultimate on my computer it says the product key will auto activate in two days i of course don’t have one what’ll exactly happen if you don’t have one will windows be inaccesable if you don’t also can you run a clean install of vista premium after you’v installed ultimate i personally don’t need ultimate and would prefer premium can you switch

umm one key only works with one version of windows……WHy on earth would someone on here be willing to give out their key that they purchased? a crack is one thing but nobody will give out a key.
